  • Henry Duke (born November 5, 1855). Chief Secretary of Ireland from July 1916 to May 1918. Conservative Party.

The post of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland had by the mid-to-late 19th century declined from being a powerful political office to that of being a symbolic quasi-monarchical figure who reigned, not ruled, over the Irish administration. Instead it was the Chief Secretary for Ireland which became central, with he, not the Lord Lieutenant, sitting on occasion in the British cabinet.

Related music

Because music is inspiring! And stuff.

The Cranberries - Zombie.

From Wikipedia: "It was written during the Cranberries' English Tour in 1993, in memory of two boys, Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, who were killed in an IRA bombing in Warrington."
The lyrics mention the Easter Rising, which is what this game is leading up to...

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...
The Minstrel Boy

From Wikipedia: "'The Minstrel Boy' is an Irish patriotic song written by Thomas Moore (1779–1852) who set it to the melody of The Moreen, an old Irish air. It is widely believed that Moore composed the song in remembrance of a number of his friends, whom he met while studying at Trinity College, Dublin and who had participated in (and were killed during) the Irish Rebellion of 1798."
The song was popular again around the time of the Easter Rising...

"Land of Song!" said the warrior bard
"Tho' all the world betrays thee
One sword at least thy rights shall guard
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"
Danny Boy.

From Wikipedia: "'Danny Boy' is a ballad written by English songwriter Frederic Weatherly and usually set to the Irish tune of the 'Londonderry Air'. It is most closely associated with Irish communities." ... "There are various theories as to the true meaning of 'Danny Boy'. Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora."
Generally interesting as a fairly new song at the time of the game, but also thematically quite interesting from the characters' perspective...

Laleh - Some Die Young.

Not quite as appropriately Irish, but included on the list because Gaya kept running into it everywhere, and it's quite fitting (or will be) for some of the characters.

Some die young,
But you better hold on,
So many things i need to say to you.
Please don't, don't let me go,
And we said we would die together...
Some die young.
P!nk - Try.

Edward and Saoirse's theme song. Their relationship is about passion, but considering they met under false pretenses, there are also a lot of lies and hurt feelings and things. Also, being incarnations of Himura and Kurou, their element is of course fire.

Where there is desire, there is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame someone's bound to get burned
But just because it burns doesn't mean you're gonna die
You've gotta get up and try, try, try
Les Miserables - ABC Cafe / Red and Black / Do You Hear the People Sing?.

A fairly major source of inspiration for the whole game. Seriously, the whole game came about because Maruppe wanted to be some kind of revolutionary. Early on, he's very inspired by all of the Les Mis-revolutionaries.

I do not doubt you mean it well
But now there is a higher call.
Who cares about your lonely soul?
We strive toward a larger goal
Our little lives don't count at all!
Red: the blood of angry men!
Black: the dark of ages past!
Red: a world about to dawn!
Black: the night that ends at last!
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
